Grapplers have busy week—

The Newcastle/Upton wrestling team started
off an action-packed two days of competition by
hosting the Buffalo’Bison in Upton last Thursday,
and co-head coach Lee McCoy admitted that it
turned into a battle of forfeits for the two teams.
“I was a little disappointed because there
weren’t really a whole lot of matches,” he began.
“And those we did wrestle, we didn’t do overly
well in because I believe that was a dual we
should have won.
As it was, the Dogies/Bobcats finished down
33-40 to the Bison.
A couple of highlights from the match came
from Blake Durfee (120-pound weight class)
who made quick work of his opponent, sticking
him in just 33 seconds, and Skylar Jenkins (160)
who did the same in 4:30. The only other Dogie
to get a win under his belt was Dakota Morgan
who won his match in the dwindling seconds of
the third period with a 4-3 decision.
“Dakota had an excellent match, and his was
really the match of the night,” McCoy exclaimed.
“We bumped him up to 182 so he’s giving up
about 20 pounds, but he’s doing a great job for
us. He showed a lot of heart and won a close
match that almost went to overtime.”
On Friday, the squad was up and at it early
to travel to Worland for the annual Battle of the
Big Horns where they faced off against Pinedale,
worland and Thermopolis in three different duals
throughout the day.
“Pinedale was a tough team that gave us some
really good competition,” McCoy admitted.
“Blake [Durfee] and Cael [Holmes] each had
really tight matches and both wrestled pretty well
but were up against a couple of evenly matched
opponents who finished with the upper hand.”
Both Durfee and Holmes (126) ended up
losing by a close 4-5 decision.
Thomas Prell (132), Aidan Coberly (145)
and Jacob Prell (170) each ran into‘what McCoy
described as some real hammers, and succumbed
to them for losses.
Kale Corley (152) Jenkins and Josh Womack
(195) were the only Dogies to come away with
wins in the team’s 18-36 loss. Each had the upper
hand in their contests, pinning their opponents in
1:53, 3:04 and 1:18 respectively.
Up next for the squad was another quality
opponent in the Worland Warriors, and Newcastle/
Upton had to face their second loss of the day in
their 18-59 defeat. Only Durfee, Corley and
Womack scored for the team. The first two stuck
their opponents While Womack won by forfeit.
“None of the matches were close and were all
blowouts one way or the other, mostly Worland’s
way,” McCoy sighed. “We have to stop giving
up pins even when we’re outgunned, because it’s
tough to win the dual that way.”
Last on the docket for Newcastle/Upton were
the Bobcats of Thermopolis. McCoy stated that
this was the best dual of the day for his squad
because they matched up prettywell and were

able to get some pretty quality mat time. This
final meet was also the only win the Dogies/
Bobcats garnered on the weekend as they fin—
ished up 42-30.
Six Dogies/Bobcats ended their day with pins,
and the competition was pretty even throughout.
“Both the Prell boys [Thomas and Jacob]
wrestled tough and got pins which I was really
excited about,” McCoy smiled. “Skylar, Dakota
and Aidan [Coberly (145)] also were able to get
falls, and Blake stuck his guy in just 34 seconds
so that was awesome to see.”
Unfortunately, Corley had a slip-up in his
match and paid for it by dropping his first match
of the season by succumbing to his opponent
early in the second period.
“It was unfortunate that Kale got pinned. He
zigged when he should have zagged, which is
unfortunate, but that happens,” McCoy frowned.
“It’s also good motivation for Kale because we
always learn more from our losses than our wins.
We were watching the video on the way home
and saw some areas where he could improve.”
The Dogies/Bobcats were scheduled to go
to Sheridan for a tournament‘on Tuesday, the
22nd, however, positive COVID-19 cases on
the Sheridan team resulted in a cancellation.
Therefore, the squad will have until Thursday,
Jan. 7, before their next competition which
will see them traveling to Glenrock to take on
the Herders.
