FFA members make Christmas magic
Tell Tavegle
Saddle Sirloin Newcastle FFA Reporter
This holiday season, Newcastle FFA
members are spreading Christmas spirit!
With the change to the Festival of Trees, FFA
members were looking for another way to take
part in the season’s festivities and they replaced
it by making western Christmas wreaths out
of ropes for the residents at Mondell Heights
Retirement Community.
Members Bailey Benshoof, J ayde Harrington,
Callie Hiser, JJ Lipp, LaKacee- Lipp, Alyssa
Morris, and Riley Lewis took part'in collecting
ropes, decorating them, and delivering them to
Mondell Heights.
Members were surprised to see all the resi-
dents lined up on the other side of the glass
doors, then were thrilled to watch each resi-
dent receive their own personalized handmade
wreath. It was a touching moment that the
“was its
be you“ this
Christmas.

members said they will never forget.
Callie Hiser summed it up best when she
said, “That just made my Christmas right there!”
We couldn’t agree more! Newcastle FFA Residents of Mondell Heights
Retirement Community show the wreath's
wishes everyone a Very Merry Christmas!

sented a challenge to the Lady
Dogies. The 4A squad was
coming off a win over Green
River on Friday, and threw
full court pressure and a 1-3-1
zone defense in ,the half-court
at the Lady Dogies which
coach Ostenson admitted they
don’t have much experience
playing against.
“We handled their full court
pressure well enough that they
actually didn’t stay in it long,”
Ostenson declared. “However,
it took us a minute to adjust to
the 1-3-1 because we haven’t
had a lot of looks at that so
far. We will definitely need to
work on that.”
After hitting nine threes
on Thursday, the Lady Dogies
struggled from beyond the are
going 0-15 on the night, and
they also had a hard time shut-
ting down outside shooters with
., their zgfle, defense. That combi-
nationafiaused the squad to dig
themselves into a hole by the
end of the third quarter.
“Their defense had us a little
off our game from beyond the
arc,” Ostenson admitted. “And
I should have stuck with our
man-to-man defense because
that was pretty good, but we
went zone and stayed in it a little
too long and let the one girl get
a little too hot for too long, and
that really hurt us.”
Newcastle battled with their
opponent in the first half going
into the locker room down only
four points. However, a run on
threes in the third quarter by
the Lady Plainsmen combined
with a scoring drought by the
Lady Dogies left them in a
20-point deficit with only one
quarter to go.
In the final eight minutes of
play, the Lady Dogies battled
back to get within 11 points,
but a final three by Laramie
closed out the 57—43 win for
the 4A team.
“I thought we came out
and played pretty well against
them,” Ostenson insisted. “It
was a really great opportunity
for us because we learned that
we can hang. with a team like
that, and it also showed us areas
of the game that we need to
work on.”
A highlight of the contest was
that though they were outsized
by Laramie, Newcastle actually
dominated them on the glass,
pulling down 10 more rebounds
than the larger team. Stanton
and Ostenson were particularly
aggressive on the boards, snag-
ging 15 and 12 respectively.
Tidyman was the team’s
leading scorer on the night with
14 points, Ostenson picked up
her first double-double of the
year scoring 13 points to go
along with her 12 rebounds,
Stanton and Miles each added
six, while McFarland and Claire
Beastrom each contributed two
points to the team’s total.
The Lady Dogies have a
couple of weeks off and will
come back by going to Worland
on Monday, Jan. 4, and then will
host Torrington on Friday, Jan. 8,
when they will also be honoring
the seniors on the team.

players and fans held our collective breath
so far this year, especially when looking
to see whether or not they would begin as
scheduled.
Once again, we dodged the bullet and all
four teams got their seasons under way in the
last two weekends.
Of course, it doesn’t look the way we are
used to, with the restrictions on attendance
and the mask mandates for everyone except
the kids on the court, mat or pool, but at least
the kids are getting to compete and for that
everyone is grateful.
And thankfully, we have the NFHS Network
which allows us to virtually attend basketball
games and wrestling matches from the comfort
of our couches. No, it’s not the same as being
there and I feel bad'for the kids because there’s
nothing like having the support of the fans in
the stands, but it’s’better than nothing for sure.
As we go into Christmas break, I feel a sense
of relief for what we’ve been able to accomplish
it
around at the rest of the country and even
around the globe.
Apparently, there is a new strain of the virus
that has prompted the British government to
lockdown London over the Christmas holiday
so much so that families are not allowed to
gather if they do not live in the same household.
I fervently hope that strain doesn’t jump the
pond and start a new round of lockdowns and
quarantines, but looking back over the last 10
months, I’m sure no one is taking the remainder
of this school year for granted.
However, over the next couple of weeks I
am going to take full advantage of the break
from school and sports to rest, refresh and
reflect, and I hope everyone else does the same
so that we can come back strong and ready to
take on the second semester with gusto.
I wish for everyone a joyous Christmas
holiday full of peace and love.
