Freestyle with the remaining
events being 50 yards.
Scribner spoke to his team
prior to the start of the contest
and gave them an option for
which level they wished to
enter.
"We had some guys prepared
to compete at the varsity level,
but I gave the team the option
of splitting up and going with
our strengths at both levels, or
loading the whole team into the
JV division to try to win it all,"
Scribner explained. "They were
excited to go the JV route and
that decision turned out to be
a good choice because every-
body swam really well and we
brought home second place as
a team."
The Dogies have a couple
of swimmers who have com-
peted pretty regularly at the
club level, but Scribner pointed
out that high school meets are a
different experience than club
competitions.
"After our first meet on
Friday, everybody was really
excited with how we performed,
so we went into Saturday really
pumped up and everyone swam
really well," Scribner observed.
Though Newcastle did
not accomplish their goal of
winning the junior varsity divi-
sion, the fact that they lost only
to a strong Kelly Walsh team
took away a bit of the sting.
Scoring for the Pentathlon is
different than a regular meet. In
order to place, each swimmer
must finish all five events
legally, which means the swim-
mers must make each race in
the correct heat and swim each
stroke correctly. If a competitor
is disqualified in any of the five
events, he would not be scored
and would be out of the running
for placement.
Those that complete all five
events legally have their total
times added together and then
receive their ranking.
The Dogies put up a strong
performance with Matt Tidd
ranking ninth, Eythan Riley
10th, Trenton Parsons 17th,
Jacob Hobbs 20th and Kyle
Allard rounded out the placers
at 36th.
"Matt probably had the
most surprising performance,"
Scribner mused. "He swam
as a freshman and then didn't
his sophomore and junior year
because there was no team, so
I wasn't sure what to expect. I
was very pleased that he came
out on Saturday and was very
competitive."
Scribner was anxious to see
how competitive the boys were
in their races and Tidd did very
well winning two of his heats,
besting Riley, who has been
one of the squad's top swim-
mers.
According to Scribner, the
Dogies could have placed an
athlete even higher than ninth
were it not for a disqualification
of one of his swimmers.
"I did the math and Jacob
Yeatman would have placed
fourth overall, but unfortunately
he swam in the wrong heat in
one of his races so that put him
out of the running for scoring
possibilities," he stated.
Coaches and swimmers were
pleased to place five Dogies out
of 86 total swimmers at the
meet, and finishing in second
was also encouraging for all.
In addition to the team
success on the day, Yeatman
qualified for the State meet
in the 50 Free with a time of
26.37 and Riley also punched
his ticket to the culminating
meet in the 100 Free by fin-
ishing in 58.19.
Though the divers did not
compete last weekend, Scribner
stated that the team will benefit
from points scored in that event
as they move forward into the
season.

A win there would advance the athlete to
the semis, while a loss meant a trip to the
consolation bracket with the best finish there
being third.
Though no other wrestler nabbed a place
at the tournament, some came close.
"Dennon was one match away from
placing and was actually winning the match
7-3 but then with just ten seconds left he got
thrown on his back for a little bit and ended
up losing which is tough to swallow at that
point," Clark sighed.
Others who picked up some wins on
the day were Dilon Jeppeson (120), Payton
Connelly (126), Marshall Rhoades (152)
and James Moberly (170).
"We knew it would be hard going in
but it's nice that in this tourney they offer a
second chance, so several of our guys got to
wrestle in that. We got some good matches
there and picked up some wins, but most
importantly we got some mat time which
is great at this point in the season," Clark
stated
Overall, the squad competed well and
placed about as high as coaches expected
them to and they were really excited to have
three placers at such a challenging tourna-
ment. Though it was apparent to Clark and
the coaching staff that the men still have
work to do in their conditioning the team
looked pretty good for the first weekend.
The squad only has three days to improve
their condition this week as, once again,
they have a full slate of competition lined
up starting with a dual in Buffalo against the
Bison on Thursday, followed by the Battle
of the Big Horns Tournament on Friday and
Saturday in Worland.
The tourney is dual format. The Battle
of the Big Horns is another large event with
most of the 3A Wyoming teams in atten-
dance, as well as other teams from around
the state.
"We are really looking forward to the
weekend as we should be able to see all the
wrestlers we will see at the state tourna-
ment," Clark explained. "We will get some
experience against those guys and we will
be able to see where we're at against them
at this point."

and playing up to their poten-
tial regardless of the quality of
their opponent.
The squad started the five
seniors for the contest, but
shortly after tip off Bartlett
decided to pull Cass and sit her
for the remainder of the game.
"Hannah started the third
game and played for about a
minute but she was looking a
little tired. I know there was
some stiffness in her knee and
we decided that we should just
sit her to be on the safe side,
as it wasn't worth the risk
of injury to play her in that
game," Bartlett explained. He
also noted that Cass was on a
much tighter leash throughout
the tournament than she used
to be because coaches are
looking to ease her into full
participation.
Though Cass was the
leading scorer in the first two
games, the Lady Dogies didn't
miss a beat in her absence and
went on to crush the Lady
Broncs by a score of 55-20.
"After the first couple of
minutes of that game the girls
played the best I think I've
ever seen them play. They went
on a scoring streak in the third
quarter when they made several
stops in a row on defense that
they turned into buckets on
the opposite end of the floor,"
Bartlett grinned. "Alyssa got
back into the groove of how
she was playing at the end of
the year last season, and out-
scored Jackson by eight points,
and as a team we were clicking
on all cylinders that game."
Dawson racked up 28 points
and pulled down 10 rebounds
for her first double-double of
the season while Gray scored
nine points and had a legiti-
mate 8 assists, followed by
Kendra Back with eight points,
five rebounds and four steals.
Bartlett couldn't help but
be pleased with the way his
two teams performed at the
tournament and noted that at
the junior varsity level, he was
pleased to see some freshmen
really step up and contribute.
Heading into the Stateline
Shootout and then conference
play after Christmas, the coach
identified one more area the
team would need to address.
"We are still trying to work
Hannah into some things and
honestly, I saw some kinks
where we just weren't flowing
like we need to be. Sometimes
it's just a matter of putting
things together, and we will
get there, but it will take some
time to work out a balance and
for the girls to settle into their
roles."
The Lady Dogies enjoyed
the success of the opening
weekend, but have turned their
attention to the upcoming tour-
nament this Thursday through
Saturday.
First opponent up for the
Dogies will be the Sundance
Lady Bulldogs in Sundance,
and though they are a 2A team,
Bartlett is aware that the squad
has some young talent and will
be a tough team that his squad
cannot overlook.
On Friday and Saturday,
Belle Fourche and Lead will
come to town and are expected
to be tough competition as
well.
"Lead is bringing back just
about everybody from last year
and will probably be the best
team we've seen so far this
season. Belle will also bring
back some players and they
always have good shooters
who are always a challenge,"
Bartlett stated.
