to see in Blake Hinze.
"We went into the game
knowing they are a good squad
with good length across the
board, so we knew we had to
come out to play and I thought
it was the best defense we've
played in a long time, espe-
cially in the first half," Von
Eye admitted.
He went on to note that
the Broncs are a hard team
to defend due to their use of
well-executed pick and rolls,
and the fact that they have
a couple of excellent outside
shooters. He feels the Dogies
executed their defense well
and forced their opponent into
some tough shots, and then
rebounded well. Their efforts
resulted in a Newcastle lead
for most of the first half and
the squad headed into the
locker room with only a three
point deficit to overcome in
the second half.
However, like in their
previous contest, the Dogies
struggled early on in the third
quarter, missing some shots
that allowed Cody to build a 14
point lead. Though Newcastle
fought back in the fourth to
close the lead, the Broncs'
offensive arsenal was too
tough to stop and the squad
dropped their second contest of
the season 48-62.
"I liked the way that we
battled and persevered. We
played hard the whole game,
and I thought we played much
better offensively than we had
against Powell. We just were
not shooting as well as we
should have been," Von Eye
stated.
Once again the Dogies were
led in scoring by Allen with 12,
followed by Cooper Karp with
10 and Quigley with nine.
Tied at one and one for
the tournament, coaches and
players were excited going into
their second game of the day
and final game of the tour-
nament against Jackson, and
they started off pretty strong.
However, about mid-way
through the first quarter things
began to change.
"Our defense just started
to go downhill, and we were
standing and allowing back
cuts. Jackson shoots well
and our rebounding was ter-
rible, which gave them second
chances, and you just can't do
that against a team who shoots
well. There were some funda-
mental lapses in that game,"
Von Eye sighed.
In the second half, the
Dogies made a run and closed
the gap, but once again were
not able to overcome the
Broncs' lead. As a result, they
closed out the weekend with
46-64 loss and a 1-2 record to
start their season.
"You're going to come
up against better basketball
teams, but as long as the effort
is there you give yourself a
chance. Unfortunately, it just
wasn't where it needed to be
in that game when we worked
our tails off in the other two
games," Von Eye frowned.
Leading the way for scoring
was Dawson Norton with 14
points, followed by Allen and
Quigley with 10 points each.
Despite the disappointing
ending after a very promising
start, Von Eye noted that he
saw some definite positives
from his team.
"There were some really
good things, but we just have
to make sure we are growing
and improving. I was very
pleased with our scoring dis-
tribution. We have our go-to
guys for scoring, but basketball
is a team sport and our other
guys did pretty well playing
their role. It was great to see,
and it's nice to know that we
have guys who will step up and
score when other teams try to
take out our big scorers," Von
Eye observed.
Scorers and role players
worked together well over the
weekend, resulting in good
transition plays. The squad
also had three players with
over three assists in each game,
which Von Eye stated is a huge
plus for a team. He did note,
however, that his team needs
to improve their rebounding
given they are not overly large.
The squad has a chance
to work out some more kinks
this weekend as they have
another tournament on tap.
The Stateline Shootout tips off
on Thursday when the Dogies
travel to Sundance to take on
the Bulldogs.
"Sundance should be an
opportunity for us to get some
confidence going as we head
into the Christmas break.
Hopefully we will be shooting
like we should and we'll get a
chance to work against a zone,
which is our Achilles heel,"
Von Eye anticipated.
Contests in the Dogie Dome
against Belle Fourche and
Lead on Friday and Saturday
will round out the tournament.
Von Eye is unsure what to
expect from Belle as the squad
has a totally new coach, but he
anticipates seeing his team in a
battle against a talented Lead
squad.
"I like the two tourneys in
a row to start things off before
Christmas. You get some good
conditioning and get to see
a lot of different schemes in
those six games. It's a great
way to see where we stand
against those teams, and allows
us to work on some things
before we enter into confer-
ence play," Von Eye reasoned.
