"There was a quote that I heard recently," head coach Matt Conzelman sighed. "You learn more from losing than you do winning, and if that's the case, we're definitely getting an education." For the second week in a row, the Dogies were shut out by their opponent as the Big Horn Rams cruised to a 49-0 victory last Friday on their home field. "It came down to the fact that they executed and we didn't," Conzelman explained. "They had three or four huge plays that we just couldn't counter." Though his team had moments early in the game that looked promising, Conzelman noted that they were just not able to get into any offen- sive rhythm, and defensively the Dogies were a little off as well. On the first drive of the game, his team was able to get the ball all the way down to the 15 yard line, but then got a holding call that stalled the offense. The team attempted a field goal in order to get on the board, but were unable to get the ball through the uprights. "Penalties were tough again for us in that game, and that's been the monkey on our back this year," Conzelman frowned. "We really just need to put a complete game in, and that's defi- nitely what we're preaching to the guys." It didn't help that the Rams' game plan con- sisted of a predominately passing strategy, which did not play into the Dogies' strengths. "Defensively we held them to 60 or 70 yards rushing, but that doesn't matter when they're airing it out against us," Conzelman stated. Despite what the scoreboard showed at the end of the contest, there were some bright spots during the game. In particular, junior Triston Roberson played well in several aspects of the game, according to Conzelman. "He played tight end in the first half and then we moved him back to the quarterback position in the second. He got a lot of first downs and moved the sticks pretty well, but we just couldn't punch it in to the end zone," Conzelman said, adding that Roberson and Ricky Larson played really well on the defensive side of the ball and that his line and linebackers also performed well. Unfortunately, the squad just couldn't make the plays they needed to on offense. Confidence is something that coaches are hoping to instill in their team as they prepare for the final game of the regular season this Friday. "We have to leam how to play with urgency this week because the season is on the line. The winner on Friday goes to the playoffs and the loser is done, so the guys need to go into this game with confidence that they will be con- tinuing into next week," Conzelman stated. The Dogies should be entering this game with a more positive attitude, given that the Thermopolis Bobcats are in the same boat as Newcastle. A loss for them will mean an end to their season as well. With so much at stake, both teams will undoubtedly be focused on getting the win, but there are some indications that the Dogies could be the team that gets it done Thermopolis is more of a running team, which Conzelman thinks should bode well for the Dogies. "If I had to choose, I'd rather defend a running attack than a passing one right now. ( think we match up pretty well to them across the board," Conzelman began. "But we need to strive to be more physical than they are and more than we have been lately, and we need to make plays. It's going to come down to who wants it, who makes the plays, who takes care of the ball, and who can punch it in to the end zone." Both teams are currently 2-3 in conference play, and the winner of the game will enter into playoffs as the four seed. As this is the last home game of the season, the seniors will be honored prior to the 6:00 p.m. kickoff, and Conzelman is hoping for a big crowd to give the Dogies some added support. "We will enter our girls in the two events that they have the best chance of success, and the races that they are most com- petitive in," explained Scribner. "We've been watching them all over the last couple of weeks and they are really starting to blossom into their best events." Among those that the coaching staff has observed, Curren is a freestyle swimmer and that is really all she swims. However, coaches note that she's really started to race and sprint so they are confident that the 200 Free will be a good event for her. Waggener has been working hard on the Butterfly and was able to qualify in the 100 Fly, so Scribner knows that her 200 IM is going to be great next weekend. Rachel Henkle, who had demonstrated that she takes to water much like a duck, has been working on sprinting the 50 Free and, according to from page 11 ...................................................................... coaches, is doing really well in that, so she will probably enter the backstroke, the 50 free or the 100 free at the Conference Meet, but it will all depend on how she is feeling. Scribner noted that Henkle is strong in all of her events and she has recently been doing great in the breaststroke, so it will come down to whatever she is going to feel most com- petitive in on the day of the meet. The squad must travel to Cody for the Conference Meet this weekend, and Scribner admitted that, as a team, he knows that the Lady Dogies will struggle due_ to low numbers. However, he is confident that individually his ladies will do well. "My focus for them is to get as high a team score as possible, so they need to place as high as they can, and I want them to come off this meet feeling confident for State," Scribner noted.
