It seems as though education is constantly under 'fire these days, whether it’s the overall system or the school or the teachers. I’m not sure if it is this negativity that contributes to the difficulty that some districts experience in finding quality teachers, coaches, substitutes, bus drivers and so on, or the nature of the work itself that causes this challenge, but it’s obviously something. As I was pondering this trou- blesome mindset recently, I got to thinking about the Newcastle school system, of which I am very proud, and happily con- cluded that we don’t struggle as much as some. Though I am not originally from here, I have grown to think of it as my 3rd Place 1st Place Senior Cooper Karp gives it everything he has coming down to the finish line at assist the athletes, who found them- selves overwhelmed and overheated. When it was all said and done, both Newcastle teams finished in fifth place behind the 4A and AA schools, but ahead of Douglas. Given that Douglas was the only 3A com- petition in the contest, the end result may bode well for the Dogies as they head in to the Conference Meet in Glenrock next Friday. “It was not the biggest meet we’ve been in, but it was pretty big as far as competition went,” head coach Pat Hayman stated. “It was a good meet for us which challenged our kids, and I thought for the most part that we did pretty well.” The runners on both the men and women’s teams showed consistency by finishing as one has come to expect at this point in the year. For the Lady Dogies, Calbi Ausmann closed out a perfect regular season by finishing in first place fol- lowed by Catherine Orban, Morgan Simianer, Paige Liggett and Betty Terry. “Calbi finished the re ular season undefeated, and that; "'etty cool because it’s been a while Since that happened,” Hayman smiled. Ausmann had some competition at this meet in the form of a very talented Gillette Lady Camel who established himself as the squad’s third man, the fact that he will not run on Friday may have a negative impact on the team’s overall finish. “When your third guy is gone, it’s more than just the runners behind him that have to step up their race, but also, the one and two guys,” Hayman explained. “If we don’t do that on Friday, we are not going to finish like we want to.” Hayman pointed out that in the four races that took place that day, including the middle school races, Newcastle had three individual cham— pions. The Dogies took top honors in the middle school girls’ and boys’ races as well ,as the varsity girls’ race, and Hayman thinks that bodes well for the future of this program. The upcoming Conference Meet is Hayman’s last, and it is also the last time it will be held in Glenrock, as they will be moving down to 2A next year. The varsity teams who will run at the Conference Meet this Friday were set by how the runners finished in Gillette. The top seven members of each team will run in the varsity race, while the rest will run JV, though the times those runners put up will be taken into consideration when deciding who will run at the State Meet in Sheridan the following I. h om ct own the Gala“ Inwtatlonal- (sonla Karp/NLJ) hung with her for about half the race. weekend. i b e c a u s e of all the w o n d e r f u l aspects Of Wayne Chaney Memorial Invite in Gillette 10I9I15 the com— Varsity Women: 5th Place with 142 points 45 Paige Liggett 26:34 Varsity Men: 5th Place with 141 points 38 Colin Heaton 20:21.15 48 Cooper Karp 22:17.21 munity not 1 Calbi Ausmann 19:17.94 46 Betty Terry 26:48.41 19 Trenton Parsons 18:39.67 42 Jacob Esposito 19:57.63 49 Peyton Purviance 23:32.20 , ’ 30 Catherine Orban 22:31.44 25 Marshall Rhoades 18:53.44 45 Holden Shultz 21:37.17 50 Eythan Riley 24:14.74 503‘?“ ml). the leaSt 0f 38 Morgan Simianer 23:51.41 37 Brandon Benson 20:06.31 46 Dalton Phillips 22:04.49 Karpe Dogie which is 5...... —"‘r‘ (\l ”__w-r“m .. ___..m.._.._.-...... _- .. _ .. ...._.. __. _“-M_-.___... -__...- ....n.. _._.4. system. / Granted I am a bit biased, but I do try to look at the district in which I work with a critical eye, and something interesting that I stumbled upon in my pondering is that there is an impressive number of Newcastle graduates who are employed in Weston County School District #1. In my opinion, it speaks volumes for the quality of this district that its alumni think well enough of the schools to return and become a part of the staff. No matter what department teachers, paraprofessionals, office staff, administration, counseling, coaches, subs, transportation, custodial staff and even the school board if you look you will find an abun— dance of former Dogies. In fact, of the 197 school — See Karp, Page 12 Swimmers Sonja Karp NLJ Sports Reporter The Lady Dogies were little fish swimming in a very big pond last Saturday, as they were the smallest of 16 teams who competed at the Swimming and Diving Invitational in Gillette. Of those teams, only four other 3A teams were in attendance, with the rest being 4A or the equivalent of that size school from South Dakota. The ladies stepped up to the chal- lenge, swimming some very impressive times given the fatigue that has set in as the season has progressed." “When looking at how we com- peted against the other 3A teams— who included Jackson, Worland and Lander— though they may have fin- ished ahead of us, the girls swam very competitively with them,” head coach 8‘” 1% H5 ln-Home Services Fundraiser 1 000;, Of Doug Scribner declared, indicating that Jackson was the only 3A team to best the Lady Dogies in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. In addition, a big highlight of the day was that the Lady Dogies finally achieved their goal of beating the Buffalo Lady Bison, against whom they have fallen short so far this season. The Gillette Invite was not the week’s only competition for the squad however. On Thursday, the team went to Douglas for a dual against the Lady Bearcats. Originally, the meet was scheduled as a double dual in which the Lady Dogies would have also com- peted in a dual against Rawlins, but due to Homecoming festivities going on in Carbon County, the Lady Outlaws backed out of the meet. “Thursday went well, and it Was a fun meet because it was just the two teams,” Scribner smiled. “We didn’t put up the fastest times there, but we were definitely competitive.” The team had a goal of taking down the Lady Cats in the 200 Medley Relay because they had beaten Newcastle the weekend before. In order to make that relay team as competitive as pos- sible, Scribner made a change to his lineup to ensure that each swimmer was racing in their strongest event. As a result, Nathina Crabtree was replaced by Shaylee Curren, who currently has a strong 50 Freestyle time, and the move was just what the ladies needed to achieve their goal and take the win over Douglas in that event. The overall team finish put the Lady Cats ahead of Newcastle when the day was done, but there were definitely some positives the team was taking with them heading into their big meet on Tomorrow A leader makingfinal adjustments Saturday. “The biggest highlight was that Nathina was close to qualifying in the 100 backstroke, so we put her in that race again on Saturday, and she swam under the required time, so has added another event to her State Meet,” Scribner grinned. Sarah Henkle is also very close to qualifying for the 100 backstroke, missing the time by only .28 of a second. Scribner anticipates entering her in backstroke this Thursday at the last- chance qualifying meet so that she can add another event to her ticket as well. “Mentally, I think that the girls are where they need to be at this point in the season. You can tell that we are physi- cally tired, but because we are prepared mentally we were able to still put up — See Swimming, Page 10
