design@newslj. com . , 1.. news letter journal NSSSWS A PIECE OF HISTORY 25 Years Ago September 28, 1995 The regularly scheduled meetings of Chapter X, PEO, will resume with the fall kickoff on Thursday evening, September 28, at the historic M Bar Ranch on Beaver Creek southwest of Newcastle. Ann Marie Wright was honored at a bridal shower on Sept. 12 at the home of Rita Vilhauer. Hostesses for the event were Marilyn Hansen, Beverly Pridgeon, Linda Engle and Rita. Osage Woman’s Club met Sept. 13 at the Community Building. Pat Townsend, president, Ruth Giffin, Doris Zimmerman and guest Laura Bock attended. On a windy, cold Sept. 23 the Newcastle Under 14 Lightning soccer team and coach Brandon met Belle Fourche on their home turf. Coming off one of the most demanding weeks of practice, the Newcastle Dogie girls swim team competed in two meets this weekend. On Friday the swimmers placed second behind Rawlins at the Buffalo Triangular. September 19 was cold, rainy, and miserable in Hot Springs, SD. Perfect racing conditions, in other words. And the Newcastle men’s varsity cross country team took fiill advantage of it as they domi- nated the meet and took first out of fourteen teams. The Newcastle Saddle and Sirloin FFA chapter had a really great year. All members who participated were tough com- petitors. Krystal Elliott was 2nd in her market steer class, and her sheep placed 2nd and 3rd in their classes. Cassie Shuck was lst in the Hampshire ram lamb class and 4th with her other ram lamb. 50 Years Ago September 24, 1970 Janie Gaskill and Chris Field are among 14,750 semi finalists in the 1970-71 National Merit Scholarship program. Monday afternoon Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Peterson, Chris and Jon drove to the Bill Kimsey home to pick up some peaches and pears which the Kimseys had gotten in Colorado during the Labor Day weekend. They enjoyed coffee and visited also with the Kimseys. Thursday and Friday Art Williams helped Jack Martens work on a windmill. Mr. and Mrs. Art Williams worked on the Hay Creek telephone line Wednesday and Sunday. Mrs. Dennis Pollat visited her father, Lawrence Popham, Saturday at the hospital in Newcastle. Wednesday evening Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Pollat visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clay George. Mrs. Melvin Pollat, Mrs. Herb Quest and Mrs. Don Kokesh went plum picking Saturday. Mrs. Lawrence Popham visited with Mrs. Ralph Houston Wednesday afiernoon. Miss Kathryn Eileen Pringle became the bride of Michael Ray Pompy, Sept. 12 at 3 pm. at the United Methodist Church with Rev. Frank Gunter offici- ating. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Pringle Jr. The parents of the bride- groom are Mr. and Mrs. Everett Pompy, 4321 Circle Drive, Rapid City, SD. An open house reception for Mr. and Mrs. Claire O. Drake in honor of their fiftieth wedding anniversary was held the evening of Sept. 11 at the IOOF hall with some 75 guests registering. 100 Years Ago September 23, 1920 An old fashioned basket dinner will be served on the church lawn next Sunday at 12 o’clock. There will be speaking afier dinner. The subjects to be discussed are ones in which all are interested. A slashing reduction in the price of Ford cars and a return to pre-war prices is announced by the West Motor company, following a statement by Henry Ford that “now is a time to call a halt on war methods, war prices, war profiteering and war greed.” The masterly pitching of Greenlee on the mound for the Gushers and the clean, heavy hitting of the club behind him, was the undoing of the Buffalo bunch in the first and third games of the series played between the two teams at the Moorcrofi Frontier days. The score of the first game was 10 to 4 in favor of the Gushers. No prisoners have escaped from the county jail here this week, due to the fact perhaps that there were none in the jail aside from R.W.
