Camp offers glimpse ahead
Sonja Karp
NLJ Sports Reporter
Two weeks ago the Little
Dogies basketball players were
hard at it in the" Dome, and on
Saturday, the big Dogies got
their turn to play a little round
ball on their home court.
This was the seventh year
that Dogie head coach Allen
Von Eye has hosted a team
camp for the boys. Normally,
the camp is a two-day event in
which participating teams play
six games. Because of lower
numbers this year, however, the
camp was consolidated into a
single day with teams playing
three games each.
The varsity squads attending
were Hot Springs, Custer, Lusk
and Newcastle. Each team, plus
Wright, also brought a junior
varsity team.
In previous years, teams
from Worland, Belle Fourche,
Spearfish, Glenrock, Lead,
Hill City, Buffalo, Arvada-
Clearmont and others have come
to Newcastle for the camp.
"We are blessed with phe-
nomenal facilities, and we are
able to logistically host a great
team camp with access to three
beautiful gyms, so it just makes
sense for us to put it on" Von
Eye said.
He also noted that the camp
provides a great opportunity for
his kids to play competitive
basketball during the offseason
at no cost.
Newcastle's good location
and proximity to other towns
throughout the Black Hills
makes it feasible for the partici-
pating teams to get good quality
competition without having to
travel very far, he said.
The camp is also an inex-
pensive option for the other
teams because Von Eye only
charges $30 a game for other
teams. Other camps charge
$350 or more.
The Dogies generally raise
some funds from the camp,
but according to Von Eye, the
team only made about $50 this
year, after paying the workers,
because not as many teams as
Cam Quigley and Dawson Norton were able to see some
varisty playing time this past season and head coach Allen Von
Eye looks for them to compete at the varsity level again next
year. (NLJ file photo)
past years participated.
Hosting a team camp also
gives some of the local officials
the opportunity t ° get experi-
ence and hone their skills in the
off-season, according to Von
Eye.
The Dogie varsity squad
of Taylor Allen, Cooper
Karp, Dawson Norton, Alec
Martinez, Triston Roberson,
Cam Quigley, Cade Ostenson
and Sawyer Roberson won all
three of its contests. They first
defeated Custer by five points,
then Hot Springs by eight and
finally Lusk by 19 points.
"The varsity played
extremely good defense in
the first three quarters of their
games against Custer and Hot
Springs, really making them
work for every basket and
leading most of the way," Von
Eye said. "Both teams closed
the gap some late, but the
Dogies were able to hold them
off. We got off to a big lead
against a young Lusk team,
leading 24-6 at half, and were
able to cruise to an easy win."
The JV team, which consists
of all freshmen and one sopho-
more, defeated Hot Springs and
Lusk but lost to a varsity-heavy
Wright. Playing for this squad
were Lyle Whitney, Ostenson,
Sawyer Roberson, Jake Lacey,
Dylan Talley, Brady Wilkes and
Isiah Covey.
After losing several seniors
to graduation, Dogie coaches
use the various summer
opportunities to help them put
together players who may have
never stepped on the court at
the same time and to give the
team a chance to start building
chemistry. Coaches and players
both get a glimpse of the poten-
tial the team has going into the
coming season.

Hoosier Tire's Black Hills Mini Sprint Tour
stopped at the Newcastle Speedway in Newcastle.
and the show belonged to Brandon Mills in the
No. 22 car for the second race in a row.
After winning last week in Sturgis, with a last
lap pass, Mills continued his winning ways in
Wyoming in front of a packed house.
Mills didn't need a late-race pass to win this
week because the No. 22 car led all 20 of the
feature event's laps, driving the high and low
grooves as he worked his way through lapped
traffic.
Rookie Riley Fremont made a late race attempt
to reel in the leader in his No. 808. but time was
not on his side. Fremont finished second in the 10 427
race but was disqualified at the scales for being 11 427
10 pounds light. This handed the runner-up spot 12 413
to John Garrigan Jr., riding in 95j, was last year's 13 405
BHMST point co-champion and is doing triple- 14 396
duty driving this weekend with his 95j Thunder 15 374
Stock car at the Black Hills Speedway. He col-
lected his first win in this division Friday night.
Finishing out the top five was the pole sitter,
Jason Robbins in No. 50 in third, BHMST point
leader Don Taylor in No. 31 in fourth and time
trial's quick-time setter, as well as the winner
of the Speedmart's Hard Charger Award for the
evening, Reggie Schrank in No. 521 in fifth.
The next race for Hoosier Tire's Black Hills
Mini Sprint Tour is June 27 in Sturgis at the
Jackpine Gypsies short track. Races start at 7 p.m.

Curry is just a blast to
watch play as well. He has mad
handles and can put up a shot
from downtown in situations
that look like there is no way
it will fall but is then right on
the money. And just when you
think he can't get any better,
he does something to prove
you wrong.
There really is only one
aspect of these games that
has disappointed me. The
gentlemen who are covering
the games are obviously biased
toward the Cavs, and it shows
-- especially in the color com-
mentary. Now, I know that I
have a definite affinity for the
Warriors, but even those who
are Cavs fans can't deny that
the commentators are obvi-
ously for Cleveland.
But I digress. Game six is
a pivotal game. It's win or go
home for the Cavs, and with a
win, the Warriors would bring
home their first NBA champi-
onship since 1975. So I'm sure
it will be an exciting one from
start to finish, and I know that
I will be glued to my TV to see
how it plays out.
