A PIECE OF HISTORY
100 years ago - June 17, 1915
Our community was startled on
Wednesday morning last by the news of
the sudden death by a stroke of light-
ning of Elias W. Whitecomb, (Grandpa
Whitecomb), of Moorcroft, one of the
earliest settlers of the state, having located
here in 1859.
W. J. Wilkins and Homer Charlton
arrived from York, Neb., Sunday evening
and are visiting at the Alverson ranch. Mr.
Wilkins is Mrs. Alverson's father and Mr.
Charlton is her cousin. This is Mr. Wilkins'
first visit to Wyoming since 1866, when
he was Custer U. S. Regulars, and will
visit old familiar places such as Inyan
Kara, Castle Creek, Devils Tower, etc. He
expresses himself as somewhat surprised
at the wonderful changes in Wyoming
since that early date.
A Fourth of July Celebration will be
held at Humphrey Hall in the Howard area
Saturday July 3. Horse races, foot races
and a ball game will be the chief ports.
There will be a "bake and take" dinner,
and after the ball game there will be free
ice cream and cake. A dance in the hall in
the evening. All cordially invited.
Excitement reigned at Hampshire
Saturday, the cause of it all was a Chinaman
made his appearance dressed up in his
China dress, and only stayed long enough
for a few of the natives to catch a fleeting
glimpse of him.
After the severe electric storm Monday,
the Coy children started home from school
but finding Dug Out creek up, returned
to the school house. Miss Barr then took
them with her to the Dixon ranch. Mrs.
Coy becoming anxious, set out on foot
to find her children, arrived at Dixon's
at eleven o'clock, wakened them and
returned home in the night.
Last Thursday when Mrs. John
Schneider was returning home from the
meeting of the club, the king-bolt of the
buggy broke, which let the front of the
15uggy do so suddenly that it threw Mrs.
Schneider and her daughter, Mrs. Gene
Watt to the ground. Had the team been
going fast at the time the accident might
have proved quite serious.
C. P. VanLeuven, the "little" Calumet
baking powder representative, was in town
yesterday. Van says if you use Calumet
right it will make nice "big" biscuits just
like himself.

slugfest, 13 to 12.

Thursday afternoon at her home with 15
members and one guest of the Sew and
So Club as her guests. The ladies brought
their own sewing and thus passed the time
of the afternoon, sewing and visiting.
Mr. and Mrs. Dick Rawhouser and
daughter Helen, of the Prairie, were shop-
ping in Newcastle Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. James Burke and daughter
of Clifton left Saturday for Laramie. Helen
will attend school there this summer. Mr.
and Mrs. Burke will visit their daughter and

before going on to Portland, Ore., to visit
their daughter, Lucille and her husband.
