The ninth annual Future
Dogies basketball camp was
held last Wednesday through
Friday, June 3-5 at the Dogie
Dome. The camp is provided
by the Dogie and Lady Dogie
basketball players and coaches,
with head coaches Allen Von
Eye and Tyler Bartlett in charge.
Von Eye and Bartlett'host this
camp each year to give young
players the opporttmity to work
with the Dogie and Lady Dogie
players to learn or improve their
basketball skills, and to get a
taste of the high school program
and what they can expect to
see when they get to NI-IS. It is
also a valuable learning experi-
ence for the varsitY players as
they get the opportunity to be
on the other side of the game,
coaching rather than playing.
This provides them a very
important insight into the game
as a whole, which translates
into making them better players
overall.
This year each program had
a great turnout of participants,
with 31 future Lady Dogies
attending the girls' session and
26 future Dogies attending the
boys' session.
The Dogie campers are sepa-
rated into two levels, the NBA
(5-8 grades) and the NCAA (3-4
grades) and the activities they
take part in scaffold up over the
course of the three days and cul-
minate in a variety of contests to
close out the camp.
The focus for the first day
is on skill development for
the campers. The coaches and
members of the varsity squad
teach specific skills that the
campers will need when they
get to the high school program.
"We spend a lot of time on
ball handling and passing, attack
moves, shooting mechanics and
defense," explained Von Eye.
The focus on the second day
is based around more advanced
skills to begin, and then by the
end of the day campers move
into the beginning of the com-
petitions. This means that pool
play for the one on one and
three on three competitions are
played so that campers get to try
out their newly acquired skills
and also get those brackets set
so they can begin their tourna-
ments promptly the next day.
"It's great to see the kiddos
working hard while having fun
interacting with our varsity
players," Von Eye smiled.
With brackets set, the
third and final day is one that
campers, coaches and players
look forward to as it is based
purely around competition.
They play out full one on one
double elimination tournaments
for both the NBA and NCAA
divisions and there is a double
elimination tournament for
three on three and five on five
in both divisions as well.
The Dogie one on one
winners this year were Dylon
Tidyman in the NBA and Mason
Sorensen in the NCAA.
The NBA three on three
Neil Whitney flashes his~ball skills at last weeks Future Dogie
Basketball Camp. Players and coaches from both boys and
girls teams put on the clinic. (Sonja Karp/NLJ)
winners were the "Spurs" who
consisted of Tidyman, Neil
Whitney, Taten Engle and
Carson Bock, while the NCAA
winners were the "Wildcats"
made up of Sorensen, William
Beastrom and Drew Conzelman.
The five on five NBA cham-
pions were the "Spurs", who
this time were Tidyman, Bock,
Kacy Jones, Aidan Gorman and
Dalton Page, and the NCAA
champs were the "Cowboys",
JJ Lipp, Thatcher Troftgruben,
Liam Gorman, Logan Olson
and Jaxon Betterton.
Individual honors were
also handed out to campers.
The NBA All-Stars were Slade
Roberson, Dillon Kenney,
Taten Engle, Landon Engle
and Hayden Overman, and the
NBA MVP was Tidyman. The
title of workout warriors went
to Denton Reese and Dayton
McFarlin.
The NCAA All-Stars were
Lipp, Beastrom, Betterton,
Olson and Troftgruben and
Sorenson took home MVP title.

The Lady Dogies' camp
is structured very similarly to
the Dogies' camp with only a
couple of exceptions. For the
girls, the WNBA division con-
sisted of sixth through eighth
graders while the NCAA was
made up of third through eighth
graders.
Like the boys, the first day's
focus was on skill work, such as
ball handling, passing, shooting
and defense. The coaches
oversaw the whole group while
the varsity squad members
worked individually with the
groups that they were assigned.
On day two, the girls held
their three on three tournament.
Each of the five seniors had
their own team to coach and
were given 30 minute practice
sessions prior to the tournament
to work on the skills they felt
were most important to make
their team competitive. While
the girls were working with
their campers, Bartlett moved
from one group to another and
was impressed with what he saw
each of the individual coaches
emphasizing.
"One is working on pounding
it in to the post, one is working
on out-of-bounds plays, one is
working on defense. It's just
really interesting to see things
from my players' points of
view," he grinned.
On the final day of the camp,
the ladies held the one on one
double elimination tourna-
ment as well as the five on five
tournament, which began with
pool play and consisted of a
single elimination bracket. Once
again, each senior was given 30
minutes of practice time prior to
the competition.
The one on one winner for
the WNBA was Lauren Lacey
and for the NCAA was Jaylen
Ostenson. The three on three
tournament winner was the team
ofLacey, Makenzie Conzelman,
and Tiernan Stanton, and the
five on five tournament was
won by the team coached by
Abby Gray consisting of players
Aishwarya Mendenhall, Alaina
Steveson, Emily Rushton,
Johnna Dawson, and Shelby
Tidyman.
The winners of the All-Star
award this year were Grace
Coy, Jayme Cass, Rushton,
Claire Beastrom, Summer
Bonnar, Conzelman, Ally Cass,
Tidyman, Bailey Cass, and
Ashlyn Mosset. The WNBA
MVP was Lacey, while the
NCAA MVP was Ostenson.
The final awards went to
the two Workout Warriors and
they were Madison Pearson and
Gabby McVay.
While the Future Dogie
camp is a great opportunity for
the youth of the community to
get a taste of the high school
programs, as well as an opportu-
nity for the current members of
the Dogie teams to get a feel of
what it is like to be on the other
side of the game, you may be
wondering what else the Dogie
and Lady Dogie players are up
to this summer.
Both squads participate in
a weekly league in Rapid City
where they play two games
per week', the boys are hosting
their annual team camp this
Saturday, June 13 and July 6-8
the Warwick Workout camp is
coming to town.

camp, interested players, can

beamed. "Tornngton was where I really
wanted to go. It's close to family and friends
and not only did I really like the school
when I visited there, but it's a full ride!"
With her decision made and her next two
years mapped out, Ctaycomb has already
started her summer workouts.
"I thought that there might be some
summer camps or something that I would
need to go to, but the~ coaches just send
the players summer workouts. I've already
received my first one and it's really hard!"
she laughed.
Because EWC is a two year junior
college, there is no redshirt program, so
Claycomb will hit the floor playing right
away when the 2015-2016 season begins.
"I'm a little nervous, but I'm super
excited," Sophie smiled.
The coaches at the Various programs
she visited were no doubt attracted to
Claycomb's well-rounded resume, another
product of living in a small town where
students are allowed-- even encouraged--
to pursue multiple activities instead of just
focusing on one or two.
"I'm really happy that I grew up in
Upton. I would never have had the opportu-
nities I had here in a bigger place. Growing
up here allowed me to prove I had skill and
to improve my skill over time. It has really
opened up doors for me, but I did have to
work for those opportunities because I come
from a small town," Sophie smiled.
The Lady Bobcats' volleyball team
also had a good season this year. The
team secured fourth place at their Regional
Tournament to earn a State Tournament
berth, but were unable to rally a win there
so went home empty handed. Claycomb's
accolades for this sport include being named
to the 1A Northeast All-Conference team
her sophomore, junior and senior years and
to the All-State team her last two years.
At the State Track meet the Lady
Bobcats won the 1A state team title and
Claycomb assisted her team by helping
All-Conference team all four years of high
school and made the All-State team as a
sophomore.
Claycomb also has proven herself in
the 4-H arena. She competes by showing
horses and pole bending. She won Reserve
Champion in working cowhorse at state last
year, and was fifth in pole bending as well.
As ifClaycomb isn't impressive enough,
she is also successful academically. She has
been on the Honor roll all four years of high
school, and made the Principal's Honor Roll
her freshman year.
"Coming from a small school is cool
too, because when you have success it
gives your town something to be proud of
as well. I'm not just representing me. I'm
representing Upton, so that is pretty neat,"
Claycomb grinned.
After her time at Torrington is over,
Claycomb thinks that she will probably go
on to the University of Wyoming to con-
the 4x100 meter relay team finish second, tinue her studies, unless another opportunity
and the 4x400 meter relay team pick up to keep playing basketball presents itself
third. She was named to the 1A Northeast elsewhere.
