thundering toward them were
within 50 yards.
At this time the wagon box fort
erupted in a solid sheet of flame
and a storm of lead whistled and
shrieked among the astonished
braves. They had expected one
volley, and then another -- and
then silence. While the soldiers
were reloading, the rapid fire
from the valiant soldiers and ci-
vilians under Powell's command
mowed Red Cloud's warriors
down by scores and what was
more important -- it threw them
into confusion.
The wave broke against the wa-
gon box corral and washed a-
round it as the Sioux circled the
small enclosure at top speed. But
the blasting fire followed them,
and hurled them back in panic.
Hoeing lost their leader of this
particular small oval, the lndians
withdrew to confer with Red
Cloud. The 32 men at the enclo-
sure now numbered 28. Lt. Jen-
ness, 2 enlisted men and one ci-
vilian had been mortally wound-
ed. Around the corral the dying
warriors were thickly piled a-
mong the killed and wounded
horses.
The int~rpid 28 breathed eas-
ier at this particular moment,
black faced from the exploding
powder and sweating in the Au-
gust sun, depending upon the ex-
tra ammunition which Captain
Powell had thoughtfully supplied
them with and prepared for the
next onslaught.
All "day long, Chief Red Cloud,
not admitting defeat, continued
to shove wave after wave of splen-
did horsemen against Powell's im-

The wagon box enclosing
Powell's men had only enough
ammunition left to withstand one
more charge. So he reserved the
fire and allowed the Sioux to pick
up their dead.
Before the Indians had complet-
ed the recovery of their dead, a
howitzer shell exploded in their
midst. The shell had been fired by
a large expedition of soldiers
from Ft. Phil Kearny.
As a result of the horrible
