Ausmann and Chord travelled with the team to Wright, where Chord got a chance to warm up by competing in the 100 meter hurdles, where she had a good run, coming in second with a time of 17.68. Normally Ausmann would have also competed in Wright, but as fate would have it she was feeling under the weather on Friday, so Hayman held her out of the early meet in order to give her every advantage to do well in Casper given her situation. In Casper, Chord finished seventh in the 300 meter hurdles but put up a season best perfor- mance by crossing the finish line in 48.61 seconds. With competition at its zenith, Ausmann's goal of bringing home the title had become much more difficult to achieve given her ailing health, and though she also ran a season best time of 2:19.16 in the 800, she had to settle for second once again. "The gal who beat Calbi was from Cody and ran an excellent time, and it was pretty neat that the top three placers were all from 3A," Hayman commented. "Both Laura and Calbi had great runs, and if Calbi had to be sick for a meet, I would rather it was for this one than for Regionals or State" Hayman grinned. In Wright the Dogies were running a little shorthanded for the meet. With Ausmann out and Chord only competing in one race, two depend- able scorers were limited in their possible contri- butions to the ladies' team. For the boys, though Jacob Esposito was back to help his team, thrower Johnny Walker was not able to make it to Wright so the men felt the loss there. "There were some pretty good individual per- formances from quite a few kids, but we didn't have a full crew in some places, so that hadoan impact on the team scores," Hayman explained. Newcastle added one more state qualifier to its roster as Esposito made the cut in the 110 hurdles where he clinched fourth place and claimed a personal best time of 16.18. Rachel Henkle had an excellent meet and scored big points for her team by winning both the 800 and the 1600 meter races in 2:47.35 and 6:12.11 respectively. Mikenna Waggener also showed she had some wheels by shoring up a second place finish in the mile in 6:22.29. Like her sister, Sarah Henkle also had a good day. Though she was disqualified due to a false start in the 100 meter race, she grabbed third place in the 400 meter and fifth in the 200 meter races with times of 1:05.96 and 28.46 respectively. When all was said and done, the Lady Dogies were able to accumulate 50 team points to finish in sixth place overall. The men's team struggled a little with some injuries, but there were some positives. Trenton Parsons wrapped up another first place finish in the 1600 meter race in 4:59.15, and picked up a personal best in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:12.78 to claim third place. Cam Quigley also picked up fourth place in the pole vault, clearing nine feet even. While the running events went well for the team, according to Hayman, the throwers had a bit of an off day. After several of them had achieved personal bests in Custer, they just seemed to fall a little flat in Wright. However, there were a couple of throwers who were on their individual game as Jacob Hobbs and Jonny Manders each had good distances in the discus throw. Unfortunately, injuries kept Quigley from par- ticipating in anything other than the pole vault, and Ricky Larson hurt himself in the triple jump by landing on the end of the runway and bruising his heel. That injury hobbled him, and kept him from being at his peak in the subsequent races that he ran. Given the obstacles, the men were still able to claim 43.5 points, putting them in seventh place. "All in all, it was a pretty good day considering the circumstances," Hayman nodded. The team has one last chance to qualify for the State Meet, as they travel to Upton for their final regular meet of the season on Friday, May 8. The meet is actually the Sundance meet, but it is held in Upton because Sundance doesn't have a track. If the athletes do not get under the qualifying times in Upton, they will have one more chance to punch their ticket to State at the Regional Meet the following weekend. • ii/ i i!i ililili Now Thru May 11 th, Save $5 OFF OTHER' DAY day, M 0th n ay 1 F L 0 R A L & G i F 'l' Delivery i Gift Wrapping 307-746-4868 • 709 W.
