WCNRD District Manager Lacey Gurien explained junipers are referred to as "little green gas cans" in a fire situation- because of the volatile oils in the tree, and the dead material that builds up in o underneath them. "This is the first year that we are doing this. Hopefully the word will get out and people will replace junipers and make their home safer," she stated. To participate, Weston County residents need to sign up for the program at the WCNRD office and commit to remove junipers located within 30 feet of their home. Weston County Fuel Mitigation Coordinator Carol Nicholls will visit the applicant's home to talk about defensible space and soil quality to determine which replacement plants would work best. WCNRD will be. providing fire resistant potted replacements with a limit of three per household, and they will be awfilable May 11-23. Replacement choices are spirea "snow mound", lilac, forsythia, choke- cherry, and Cinderella honeyberry. Thought and consideration were given in deciding what trees to offer acknowl- edged Gurien. A variety o1" size, light needs, features and landscape uses were all considered. She said all of the plants will need regular watering and are more fire resistant than juniper trees. "The program is available to all resi- dents of Weston County on a first come- first serve basis. Only 50 potted replace- ments have been ordered this year so don't put off getting yours," Nicholls urged. Denice p!sciott/NLJ l.ocal fire officials are encouraging rural residents to remove highly flammable junipers from the vicinity of their homes. At the homeowners request, personnel and crews will be available to remove the juniper trees and plant the free replacement vegetation at locations within 10 miles of de city limits. Newcastle Boy Scout Pack #66 and Newcastle Firefighter Explorer Post #66 have volunteered to assist with. the Wyoming State Forestry Division. and the Weston County Fire Protection' District's Fuel Mitigation Program for the program being offered as part of Wildfire Preparedness Month. For more information call Gurien at 746-3264 or Nicholls at 629-1173. Sir, yes sir! Denice Pisciott/NLJ Stan Carter, with Mastery Prep, gives 115 Newcastle High School and Upton High School students tips on taking the ACT test. In the one day ACT Boot Camp session at Crouch Auditorium, students learned tips, tactics and strategies to improve their test scores through a detailed workbook. After practice tests, the students went over the answers to learn if they were right or wrong, and how to cut the amount of time they use to answer questions and complete the test. The workshop was designed by Craig Gerhing to be used in the "final hours" before the test. All high school juniors in the state of Wyoming are required to take the ACT test. NHS Juniors will take the state test on Tuesday, April 28. Tax season means phone seams As April 15 approaches, the IRS warns taxpayers not to be fooled by the tricks scammers use to take advantage of those they target. Scammers use fake names, provide bogus IRS badge numbers and alter caller ID numbers to make it look like the IRS is calling. With the final two weeks of the filing season underway and millions preparing their returns. taxpayers should be alert. "This is no April Fool's joke. Everyone should be on the lookout for threatening calls from people faking IRS phone numbers and demands for immediate payment," IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said. "These are seams. ! urge taxpayers to stay vigilant and remain aware of the constantly changing tactics used by these criminals." As the filing season nears its end, there has been a surge 6f phone seams where seam artists threaten police arrest, deportation, license revocation and other threats. They often leave "urgent" callback requests and some- times prey on he most vulner- able people, such as the elderly, newly arrived immigrants and those whose first language is not English. Scammers have been known to impersonate agents from IRS Criminal Investigation as well. Here are five things the stammers often do but the IRS will not do. The IRS will not: • Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill. • Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the oppor- tunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe. • Require you to use a spe- cific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card. • Ask for credit ordebit card numbers over the phone. • Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying. The IRS also does not use email, text messages or any social media to discuss your personal tax issue involving bills or refunds. If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and asking for money, you should call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. The IRS workers can help you with a payment issue. If you know you don't owe taxes or have no reason to believe that you do, report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (T!GTA) at 1-800-366-4484 or report it online at the http://www.trea- sury.gov/tigta/contact_report_ scam.shtml." If you've been tar- geted by this seam, also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their FFC Complaint ,,._s!.r! at FTC.gov. If the complaint involves someone impersonating the IRS, include the words "IRS Telephone Scam" in the notes.
