Denice Pisciotti/NLJ Transportation director Mark Peterson told school board members that the new camera systems provide him with anoth- er tool to protect students and bus drivers alike• given to the Newcastle Police Department when infractions are reported. The ability of the cameras to capture moments in time has been tested inadvertently. "Since we have had them, we have hit two deer and we have got to see the deer coming up. That works out pretty good," Peterson smiled. ' ' The global tracking system in the digiXal-video ,recorder also allows each bus to be tracked when and where they stop. This enables Peterson to know if a bus was on time at each location down to the second. Peterson said he reviews a video from a bus on the average of once a week. The video is recorded and stored on a hard drive on each bus, and the drivers have the ability to mark an area on the "They are really good too vhen you have kids crossing the road. You can see for quite a while what they are doing and Where they are going," Peterson added. In the fall of 2014, most of the buses were equipped with (hree cameras on the outside md three cameras inside. The smaller buses and the spare bus lave two Ot he inside, anti, two On the.outside-, : ,: ....... The stop arm cameras on the side of the bus work well . to identify license plates, which Peterson hopes will deter drivers from not stopping when the stop sign on the bus is out and displayed to approaching traffic. A print up of a picture of the vehicle, with license plate, possible driver identifica- tion and Google map location of the vehicles at the time is hard drive by using a button on the unit to find a particular incident they would like the director to see. Peterson said that his intent is not to spy or eavesdrop on student conversations while reviewing the recordings taken by the cameras on the buses. He looks for a specific issue that has been brought to his attention. "We are looking for where they have damaged something, physical contact between kids or just plain horsing around. I wait for an incident to come up," he said. Currently the recordings are not viewable while they are in use. The equipment does have that capability, but the cell phone plan required to be able to transfer the data to real time video in the transportation office has not been purchased yet. Peterson acknowledged at some point that may be war- ranted, but it has not seemed a necessity yet. When Peterson became the transportation director over five years ago, 70,'petcent of the: buses had one,, oa, mera inside already installed on them. He admitted they did alright, but he appreciates that the new system allows more coverage because the truth is more dis- cernible when it is seen on video. District officials are not forced to rely on the word of the driver or the student when incidents occur. "The cameras are just another tool that help us," Peterson reasoned. "The legislature worked incredibly hard this session, and we accomplished a great deal. We have worked on bills that will increase jobs, itnprove infrastructure, and enhance our education System," he claimed. Hunt disagreed in particular with leadership's assessment of legislation dealing with education. He told the News Letter Journal that he was per- sonally disappointed in the failure of House Bill 103, which he sponsored, because of the potential the bill had to boost the economy in Wyoming ind "start something great for the state." The bill sought to establish a task force to look into scholarships for vocational and technical career courses of study. "On a larger scale, the accountability bill went iiiiii:iapitol Website http://legisweb.state./.us through," Hunt lamented, calling this another rsonal failure during this year's session. He explained that while the bill was heavily amended" By the time it went to the governor, he believes it will still further the state's control over local chool districts. House Speaker Kermit Brown, however, ,choed Stubson's sentiments that the legislator Lonored its "commitment to providing Wyoming tudents with a world class education." "We need to ensure that Wyoming students re prepared to compete for jobs in the global conomy when they graduate," Brown stated. They should have a holistic education and be ble to find a stable, well-paying job here in Vyoming." Representative Tyler Lindholm, who repre- ents northern Weston County, reported that the ,iggest failure for him personally involved the ',enate's vote to not overturn the Governor's eto of the Asset Forfeiture bill that would have equired conviction for a crime before forfeiture ok place. The county's two voices in the House of Representatives did enjoy some trumps during the session, however, and Hunt admitted that he was happy that his bill to allow larger shipments of wine, or House Bill 47, was passed, while Lindholm was ecstatic over the approval of the Wyoming Food Freedom Act- the rookie law- maker's signature piece of legislation. Regardless of how individual legislators viewed the recently concluded session, it is the last that will be held in the Capitol Building for the next few years, as the building will be undergoing a massive renovation during next year's budget session. Stubson said that he was proud of the manner in which the group conducted itself. "The legislators completed this last session in the current Capitol with dignity, decorum, civility, and efficiency. This session wasn't flashy. It was a long, hard worked in the trenches session where legislators roiled up their sleeves, and continued to move Wyoming forward," he asserted.
