The Nicollet of- fers a small, functional, compact layout, using every square inch of space. If you enjoy privacy, you'll like the fact that four of the 5 rooms face the rear or garden side. Though the main house is only 26' x 28', notice the large living-dining room and well arranged kitchen and breakfast nook. Or does the laun- dry room have your eye? The down- stairs lavatory will be appreciated by all members of the family. The upstairs includes three bedrooms and bath with large, roomy closets which are cleverly situated to sepa- rate bedrooms and serve as sound t~ barriers. The well-conceived, at- tached garage has an entrance to either front or rear hall, a tool room, a utility closet and a protected entrance to the laundry room. Main House approximately 20,750 cubic feet; overall dimensions, 86'-0" x 39 10' . Come in and ask about this plan. Ask to see Plan No. 2002. Sometimes he said, "Car going up," or Minute but usually he Fiction just clicked his castanetss n d motioned. Ted sidestepped the crowd going into the second car. Valerie oper- ated elevator number three part time, helping to put herself through college. The professor winked and let Ted go in, but it wasn't any good. He was shoved into the corner opposite Valerie by eager shoppers. Romance in an qevator. Ted thought wryly. Personal conversa- tion, interrupted by calls of "Three miss," and "Second, please," was nearly impossible, but Valcrie man- aged it. "Good morning, Mr. Davis," she stud now. formally. "Why aren't ~,ou at college?" "Too nice a morning to be Cooped up," he said. watching her but con- scious that every eye was on him. Everybody streamed out by the time they reached the top floor and only two nurses got in for the down ride. Quickly, he said. "l'm quitting school." Valerie's expressions -- anger chasing disappointment -- told him how she felt. As people got on at the fourth floor level, all she could say was, "I'm afraid you're making a mistake." Ted had known Valerie would be stubborn. First floor and everybody out as a new stream crowded in. Just enough cot]fused time for rod to stop beside her. "l~'s that job," he said urgently, 'T]I be making enough for us to be married on, Steady work." The castanets clicked, the profes. sor's arm moved, [)eople shuffled forward. Watching him. Ted was reminded of an automat. The pro- fessor was a fixture, performing the same gestures routinely ttabit and duty guiding him. Like a pup- pet, Ted thought, realizing why Valcrie wanted him to talk to the professor. With the elevators all in use, he turned to Ted. "How's college?" As the elevator zoomed past the fourth floor he took her his arms and proposed. "I'm quitting for a lob at $2.70 an hour." "So you can get married?" "Valerie says she won't marry me unless I finish college." "Smart girl," the professox said quietly, turning back to the impa- tient people, castanets clicking, arm waving. Yes and No One half the troubles of this life can be hseed to saying "yes" too soon and not saying "no" soon enough. In the next lull, the professor spoke hurriedly, "I took this Job on temporarily 23 years ago, because I needed mbney to be married. ! was going to teach, be a professor, but the children started coming and this was steady. Great Job if you like herding sheep." Ted watched the professor with sharpened awareness. H e r d t n g sheep. A steady Job, but automatic. No thought, no chance for advance- ment, That's what Valerie had wanted him to see. Was Valerie afraid he'd end up like the profes- sor? Thoughtfully, Ted boarded the third car, standing as close to Valerie as the pressure of the crowd would allow. "I thought you had to work," she said coldly. "I'm going back to college," he said, forgetting the people when he saw her eyes light up. They shot past the second floor without stop- ping. "Will you marry me right away?" he asked. "Oh, yes," she said and the ele- vator zoo~ned past the fourth floor level as he took her in hl~ arms.
